Notes

A river’s bend takes its title from the Old Norse etymology for ‘Bowland’, from boga- or bogi-, meaning a ‘bend in a river’. The Forest of Bowland area is characterised by stark, open moorland, a scattering of woodlands, and cut through with dry-stone walls, and roads meandering through the river valleys. This painting began with a view from high up, looking out to the hills and down to a remote farm below. In the high midday sun, the road glistened silver like the slow-moving river it traced in the valley below.” – Grace Crabtree, 2022

Grace Crabtree is an artist based in Bridport, West Dorset, whose paintings of land and water are grounded in the experience of walking or swimming, and infused with hints of historic or mythic narratives connected to a place. Working mostly in egg tempera, the painting surfaces hold delicate layers and scratched incisions.
