About
Elena Rivera-Montanes (b.1998, UK) is a painter based in London. She received her BA (Hons) in Fine Art: Painting from Wimbledon College of Arts and was awarded the Prunella Clough Residency Prize 2020 upon graduating. Primarily exploring themes of time, loss, and observations of life, Elena depicts interior and domestic spaces that are familiar to her. Through a nostalgic colour palette and photographic quality Elena stitches together memories, overlooked moments and personal history to tell stories. Evoking a familiarity most can respond to, the work floats between the past and present. By collaging these liminal spaces to form cropped, close-up fragments of time, Elena explores the ambivalence between the places and people she can remember and what has been forgotten.

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artworks
These paintings were created in response to feelings of loss and memory. Birds have become a recurring theme in my work, they often appear to be returning to these collaged, half-forgotten spaces, portraying either a moment of apprehension and havoc within the scene or alternatively some stillness and tranquillity.
