Notes

About

Heiyi Tam (@heiyitam) is a Hong Kong-born artist based in London whose work surrounds childlike wonder, the intangibility of childhood memories, and the experience of the gradual merging of eastern and western cultures since moving to the UK at the age of 15.

Her fun and colourful style swirls around the nostalgia of her childhood memories of western animated films and television, sweet confectioneries, and ancient Chinese landscapes and calligraphy. Her work centres around reconstructing fractured memories from her childhood, as well as building and preserving relationships between the real and the imagined, the conscious and unconscious, and the present and the past.

Education

She is currently completing her MA in Art and Science at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London (@csm_news) (2021-2023) and was previously awarded a BA (Hons) in Philosophy and Psychology from the University of Warwick (2016-2019). The fragility and fallibility of memory, in particular, inspires her work as she captures seemingly mundane everyday moments and emotions within.

Select Exhibitions/Awards

In 2022, Heiyi was the runner-up for the Tiepolo Blue Art Competition, judged by James Cahill and artist Maggi Hambling (CBE). She was also awarded fourth prize in the Landmark Student Art Prize after being shortlisted in the Top 50. Her most recent exhibition, "The Lost and the Remained" at The Koppel Project (@the_koppel_project), focused on nostalgia, loss, and the diaspora of one's heritage and culture.

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artworks

"confetti tears!" and "confetti tears?" are the smallest scale she has worked on. These works are representative of the artist's current style and offer an alternative perspective to her larger paintings.
