Notes

About

Catherine Jacobs is a visual artist based in London, who works with close-up photography, slow motion video, painting and mixed media and has exhibited nationally and internationally. Catherine uses ambiguity and curiosity in her art to encourage our poetic readings, subjective responses and shared dialogues; helping us to slow down and build connections with each other and the natural world we are part of. Her practice is based on research and theories from her parallel career as a Research Psychologist.

Education

Catherine has BTECs in Photography at the City of Westminster College, London and Continuing Studies at Chelsea College of Arts. Her degree in Psychology and recent awarding of a Research Chartership by the British Psychological Society are also key influences in her art practice.

Select Exhibitions/Awards

Catherine shows extensively in both artist-led and commercial group exhibitions and undertakes artistic residencies. Her solo shows include the Midlands Art Centre (mac) Birmingham, Herefordshire Photography Festival, Brighton Photo Fringe and the British Psychological Society’s Annual Conference. Her past involvements include Whitstable Biennale Satellite, Flowers Gallery, Sarah Myerscough Gallery, Koppel Project, London Group Open, and many more. Art Fairs include the London Art Fair and Photo LA. She ran ‘Viewfinder’, a participatory landscape photographic project for staff and patients of an NHS cancer ward and has held residencies at The Florence Trust in London and ‘Rural Idyll’ on a working sheep farm in Suffolk. In 2024 she is working with artists from ÖSKG studios in Sweden for the artist group ArtCan’s new collaborative exhibition ‘Bridge’, which will tour to London in the autumn.

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork

All three postcards by artist Catherine Jacobs are from her new, black and white limited edition photographic series entitled The Scale of It? Depicting jellyfish in an aquarium, these works highlight the benefits of engaging our curiosity about more-than-human world. In the words of the award winning author Ed Yong from his recent book ‘An Immense World’:- ‘When we pay attention to other animals, our own world expands and deepens… through our curiosity and imagination, we can try to step into their worlds… to have that choice is a gift’. The Scale of It? works also refer to the increasing prevalence of these animals as our oceans warm and are therefore presented as environmentally friendly giclée prints on 290g Hahnemühle Bamboo textured paper (90% Bamboo fibres and 10% cotton).

You must not reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, resell or exploit any works. In doing so, you endanger our relationships with artists, and directly jeopardise the charitable work we do.
