Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork

My work is concerned with two interrelated themes: the circularity of energy and the memory of gesture over time which I explore using expressive and calligraphic mark-making. These ideas have preoccupied me for decades and were further developed from my years living in Asia. I paint a great many small studies, often as an initial idea, a test to develop further. Two are circular and two more calligraphic, memories of movement experienced and drawn last summer. These small paintings are both dynamic and contemplative, using a variety of media including acrylics, gesso and ink to produce pieces that reveal themselves slowly over time.
