About

‘I make work about female experience. My practice is transportive. I use staged portraiture as a canvas to tell stories. I like to play with literature as a jumping off point and invent characters to consider themes of identity, mortality and the female body’

Jennifer has received numerous international awards and artist residencies for her work. She was shortlisted for the 8th Dentons Art Prize in 2019. In 2017 she was commissioned to produce new work funded by the Arts Council England and British Council’s Re-Imagine India cultural exchange programme and in 2014 invited by collector Frances Reynolds to be an artist in residence at Instituto Inclusartiz, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A portrait from her project In Sight of My Skin received second prize in the prestigious Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize at The National Portrait Gallery, London (2012) and won first prize at the International Photography Awards (Lucie’s, 2013). In addition to her practice, she lectures in photography, currently at UCA Farnham. Her work is held in public and private collections.

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artworks

Laura #I, Sussex 2017 from the series 'Burnt Eggshells & All The Things I Left Behind'

Fragments of myself, past, present and future are glimpsed in close domestic spaces over a period of five years.

Burnt Eggshells & All The Things I Left Behind considers metamorphosis, specifically the physical and mental transition from myself to mother back to me again. I photograph shared and intimate moments with my daughter and close circle of friends.

When life is obsessed by time, progress and milestones my response is to slow it down.

Characterised against a back drop of maternal interruption and feelings of loss for my former self. This work honours my need to make sense of who I am, who I was and where I am going.

Caught between lockdowns I document the passing of time, nature’s cycle, lifelong friends and our growing children. Portraits of mothers-to-be seizing control in a pandemic landscape where so much was lost.
