Notes

About
Maeve Van Klaveren (b. 1977)  lives and works in Utrecht. Her work is figurative. Van Klaveren is intrigued by the everyday life. The subject often arises from something small, an image or a thought. Each figure is drawn upon expressing specific mood(s). Van Klaveren also sets a distinct focus on the materiality of the work. A vital part of the practice is the use of drawing material that can portray characteristic feelings with a preference for watercolour and pastel. The thematic often arises from the will to portray certain emotions such as sadness, happiness, love, life or death.

Statement
I use different materials such as watercolor, soft pastel, pencil and charcoal on paper to creates a believable world in powdery drawings. I like to leave my work open to multiple interpretations. In the work I explore genres of still-life and portraiture to create a clear story.
My work is figurative. What you see is taken from daily life. Something intrigues me and this I process into my drawings. The subject often arises from something small - an image or thought. The idea behind a work should not impose.
It does not tell one-on-one a story of sadness, happiness, love, life or death…. But this is often a reason from which a work arises. These are thoughts I have at that moment that I put into the drawing.
It is my personal story of how I look at feelings, relationships ... ... ... desires, connection ... ... hope and despair, life and death. I try, as it were, to convey timeless all-rounder common emotion. The figures in my drawings express moods. I play with the viewer's perception, such as with this floral work, are the flowers actually given or received. What energie they give. For me the flowers stand for expressing emotions. Being human and nature are important sources of inspiration.
